Busting the Myth of Balance

As women (especially as mothers), we are told that we need to create balance in our lives. We need to find a way to fulfill all of our roles and have the energy to handle each of them effortlessly.

When I hear the word balance, I cringe. Because what I hear is that we need to do things perfectly. We need to cook the perfect, homemade meals, be at every single soccer game, get our nails done, read all the books, and do all the yoga, and it needs to look effortless.

That’s not possible. That’s not realistic. And it is certainly not healthy to strive for.

So, let’s bust this myth of balance once and for all and see how we can have more harmony in our lives. Let’s see how we can show up imperfectly and feel good about it.

Being present > Being everything

We play a lot of different roles each and every day and wear a lot of different hats.

You may need to be a mother, a caregiver, a partner, a friend, a business owner, a boss, a client, a neighbour, and the list can just keep going.

In a world that thrives on being constantly available and endless to-do lists, embracing this idea can be revolutionary. Whether you're working on your business or spending time with your family, the magic happens when you deliberately create space for excelling at one role at a time. It happens when we allow ourselves the freedom to be fully present.

The idea is refreshingly simple yet profound: become the master of the moment. Doing this not only gets better results but also liberates you from the unrealistic expectation of being flawless in every aspect of life.

Pay attention to nature

Our natural world is built on seasons. Even our bodies have hormonal cycles and seasons.

One thing that is great about seasons is that they come and go. They do not last forever (and as this winter gets increasingly cold, I am grateful for that!)

Seasons naturally have an ebb and a flow to them, and we do not expect seasons to be anything more than what they are. For example, if you have a garden, do you expect it to be fruitful right now? Of course not! It’s winter. It’s not the season for growth.  It’s the season for rest, to prepare for growth.

Why not treat our bodies like a garden? Our bodies have an innate wisdom and know what they need. Sometimes we are in our growth season. Sometimes we need our rest season to prepare for what’s next. And that is simply how it should be.

Create more space to be flexible

When we accept that we don’t need to be everything all at once, it gives us space and permission to be flexible.

For example, this week, I need to spend more time working on my business. As a result, I will miss one of my daughter’s soccer practices. That does not make me a less dedicated parent. It simply means that right now, my focus is directed elsewhere.

Rather than looking at the different areas of our lives on a day-to-day basis, take a step back. Integrating the different areas of our lives is not achieved in a single day. It is over the course of different seasons.

So, let go of the guilt and embrace how flexible life can be. When we understand and truly believe that it’s perfectly acceptable not to be everything at once, we can have a more fulfilling and balanced existence.

After all, life is a series of seasons, and each one demands a different commitment of our time and energy.
