5 tips for Working with An Online Health Coach

A certified health coach has completed a program, certification or course that allows them to support and guide clients on a wholistic path to health, in various areas such as nutrition, exercise and more. They can help you succeed on your health and wellness journey and may have a niche or specialty like weight loss or energy or cater to a specific demographic like those with diabetes or pregnant. Did you know that having a plan and accountability can help you achieve almost any goal with a success rate of upwards of 95%? That puts you way ahead of the general public that tends to cycle through the same ideas, mindset struggles and roadblocks.

A coach can help you define your goals, put realistic timelines to it and create unique action steps for your life and health aims.

A coach will take into account all that is going on in your life and will not leave you with a generic plan, but a highly specific one that gets results.

A coach may have a program that has sessions or lessons each week, or biweekly. They may free flow through sessions or have prepared content to cover and actions steps. These programs can range from a few weeks to a few months and can be 1 on 1, small group, live or pre recorded. They should also offer support in the form of worksheets, a workbook or will have you take notes each session. Support can also come in the form of a private group or community, with questions periods or email support.

Before you jump in and commit to a coach to help you, there are some things to consider.

Do they understand and listen to your concerns? Do they offer a free or inexpensive discovery or demo session? Are they experienced in the area they are coaching in? Do they offer tools and teachings that can be used outside of or after the program?

5 Tips for Working with an Online Coach

  1. Find the right one for you. Have a look at their website, social media or past clients and referrals to see if they connect with what you are trying to achieve.

  2. If they offer an introductory or demo session or call, book one so you can talk to them directly and get a feel for their style of coaching and if it resonates with what you need, not what you want.

  3. Define your goals, identifying what you really want and need is key to figuring out the right steps in the right order. Then communicate that with your coach.

  4. Come open, honest and prepared to answer some questions and reframe your thinking. The best coaches ask really great thought-provoking questions that make you think, reevaluate and move you into action.

  5. Be ready to actually do the work. Because it’s virtual doesn’t mean it takes any less work, time or effort on your part. You are investing in guidance, accountability and a plan, so show up, schedule your tasks, focus on the steps and follow through for yourself, do the work and you will definitely reap the results.

Bonus - Choose a space where you will have your sessions. Make it comfortable and as private as possible so you can feel focused, centered and calm during each session. This time is for YOU!
